Training sessions

At the club we have a variety of sessions,
5:00-6:00pm ‘Introduction to Badminton’ which is aimed at primary school players, who wish to get into badminton. Within this session we develop basic FUNdamentals along with basic badminton skills, in which we equip players with the knowledge of ‘how’ to move on court, basic grips and hitting skills. Within the session we incorporate a variety of games to keep the fun and enjoyment of the skills to a maximum. This session in particular has grown in popularity in more recent months.

6:00-7.30pm The session is a progression/development of the ‘Introduction to’ in, which we aim to further develop the  skills of players along with developing the hitting skills, the age range is similar to the first session, mainly primary school players. Within the session the club aims at introducing specific shots and rallies. We aim to get the players thinking ‘why’ play the shot and ‘when’ to play the shots, so introducing evaluating the game, the session also involves playing match situations, so singles and doubles, along with a mixture of other badminton games. At Westfield we encourage all players to enter local competitions to gain experience and improve there badminton, this also gives the players something to come training for.

7:30-9:00pm The later session is a further development of the first and second session. The session is mainly aimed at County players meaning the session is of high intensity and the workload increased in comparison to the earlier sessions. The coaches aim to develop the tactical side of the game, along with improving the shots and shot selection of the players, giving the players more freedom within the sessions to develop there own game. Moreover at Westfield Junior Development Badminton Club, one of the philosophies is the development of younger coaches, we as a club create a number of opportunities for young coaches to develop and practice there coaching, thus meaning a number of the older players in the session are now level one and level two coaches and have taken some ownership of the club. At Westfield we hope for this to continue as these coaches will keep the club running for a long time to come.

As the club has a number of links, one being with Westfield Sports College, there is a Saturday morning club, which is 9:00am-11:00am, which gives the players who are not in tournaments a chance to come and practice, the session is quite flexible in terms of the skills worked on, as the club works closely with the players to determine the sessions plans therefore getting the most out of the players and the coach. At Westfield Junior Badminton Club any new players to the club are allowed upto 4 training session after, which time if they wish to continue training they must become a club member at this time they would be asked to complete a players / parents club code of conduct form and be issued with a welcome pack.
